Critical Illness Insurance

A lump-sum benefit when a serious diagnosis strikes.

Protection Beyond Your Health Plan

A serious illness such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke brings costs that health insurance does not cover — deductibles, travel, time away from work. Critical illness insurance pays a lump-sum cash benefit directly to you upon diagnosis of a covered condition, to use however you need.

The money is yours, not the hospital's. There is no claim to file against a list of approved expenses and no network to stay inside: the benefit is paid on the diagnosis itself, and what you spend it on is your decision.

What People Use the Benefit For

  • The deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum on the health plan you already have
  • Travel and lodging when treatment is at a hospital some distance from home
  • The mortgage, the car payment and the groceries during weeks when you or the person caring for you cannot work
  • Treatment your plan does not cover, or a second opinion you would otherwise think twice about

What Is Usually Covered

Plans commonly pay on a diagnosis of invasive cancer, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, or a major organ transplant. Many also pay a smaller, partial benefit for conditions caught early, such as carcinoma in situ. Coverage is generally available whether or not you have other insurance, and it pays in addition to it rather than instead of it.

Which conditions are covered, how long you must survive the diagnosis for a benefit to be payable, and how a pre-existing condition is treated all vary by carrier and by policy. The policy itself is what governs — we will go through the one you are considering with you before you buy it.
